Assault on U.S. embassy ends in Afghanistan

It took more than 20 hours for police and military in Kabul to end an insurgent assault.

Rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons hit the U.S. Embassy, NATO headquarters and other buildings during Tuesday’s coordinated attacks.

The last six insurgents have been killed, and the area where the attackers were holed up is now safe, said the head of the police unit overseeing the operation.

At least seven Afghans died in the city’s third major attack since late June.

This latest setback casts doubt on the ability of Afghan troops to secure their own country as foreign troops leave or prepare to withdraw.
