Police will be keeping a very watchful eye on the on roads as we ring in the New Year. In Hamilton alone, 6000 cars were spot checked for impaired driving a year ago. 12 drinking and driving arrests were made. This weekend is expected to be just as busy. Dozens of ride stops will be set up in our area from New Year’s eve into New Year’s day, including up to 30 in Hamilton.

“The message is out there. People just aren’t making that choice before they leave because they get to the place and they think, how am I going to get home now? And they make the wrong decision because the alcohol is making the decision for them.” Claus Wagner, Hamilton police.

There are many ways to get home safe this New Year’s eve so that you don’t end up in the back of a cruiser. Like DDADD – which stand for designated drivers against drunk driving. The service operates between Hamilton and Mississauga. They bring two drivers to each pick up spot so that customers can be taken home in their own vehicle.

Other popular ways of getting home include Uber, a taxi, or public transit. HSR will run for free between 6 pm on New Year’s eve until 2:30 am New Year’s day. The GO train is also free after 7 pm.
