(Updated) After months of uncertainty, the future of the Toronto Argonauts is starting to look brighter.

Bell and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment chair Larry Tanenbaum announced today they’ve purchased the CFL team and are moving them to BMO Field. The team will play at the lakefront soccer stadium as early as next season, pending renovations to accommodate them.

At a news conference today, Bell CEO George Cope called it a winning move. “I assure you I cannot wait for the sold-out Argo opening game here at the newly renovated BMO Field in 2016. This is a unique partnership the city, the province and business coming together to support this legendary sports franchise and league.”

A sentiment echoed by Tanenbaum. “It’s a true (honour) to be here at BMO Field to celebrate a new chapter in the history of the Toronto Argonauts, one of the most iconic sports franchises in our city if not in all of Canada.”

“The Argos and the CFL are an incredible important part of not only the Toronto sports landscape, but our cultural landscape as Canadians.”

The Argos currently play at the Rogers Centre. Their lease at the domed stadium runs through the 2017 season, but can be terminated earlier.
