Abby Zaitley wins Hamilton Ward 4 school board by-election
Abby Zaitley has won the Ward 4 Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Trustee By-Election.
The preliminary results were announced on Jan. 7, a day after in-person and online polling closed.
The unofficial voter turnout was 473 eligible voters with 260 in person and 213 through online voting. Zaitley received 263 votes.
All results will be certified by Hamilton’s City Clerk later this week.
On her website Zaitley says she “believes in fostering a curriculum that reflects Hamilton’s diversity, ensuring that all students, including marginalized communities are represented and supported,” and that she campaigned on “increased transparency and communication, ensuring that parents, students, teachers, and community members are actively involved in shaping the policies that affect them.”
It was the first time residents could vote online in the by-election. Overall voting was reportedly a low 1.2 per cent turnout.
An election was called in Hamilton’s Ward 4 after longtime public school board trustee Ray Mulholland stepped down.
The City is planning to use the by-election to test online voting for next year’s municipal elections.
