86th Oscar Nominations

Two films with a bunch of stars in them lead the pack of this year’s Oscar nominations.

American Hustle, with its ensemble cast, and the space thriller Gravity earned 10 nominations each. With 9 nominations, Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave follows closely behind, setting up a three horse race for the Best Picture award. Rounding out the Best Picture category is Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska, Philomena, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
The stars of American Hustle all earned acting nods: Christian Bale and Amy Adams for Leading Actor and Actress, and Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence for their supporting roles. This is the second year in a row the cast of a David O. Russell film has nominations in each acting category following last year’s Silver Linings Playbook. All four actors were nominated for Golden Globes as well, but only the women took home awards. Other notable acting nominations include two stars of August: Osage County: Meryl Streep who earns her record 18th nomination, and Julia Roberts with her first nomination since winning Best Actress in 2000 for Erin Brockovich. Leonardo DiCaprio receives his fourth Oscar nomination for The Wolf of Wall Street and will be looking for his first win.
Most of the major award categories are limited to five nominees, which means many worthy performances are often overlooked. This year is no different with highly praised films like Inside Llewyn Davis and The Butler being left in the cold. The most notable snubs this year include Joaquin Phoenix in Her, Robert Redford in All Is Lost, Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips and Emma Thompson in Saving Mr. Banks. The later two are both nominated for SAG awards, which is usually a good predictor of Academy nominations. It is Redford’s work in the survival drama All Is Lost that is perhaps the most noteworthy omission. He is the only cast member in the film, credited as ‘Our Man’, and has virtually no dialogue, yet he gives what many considered one of the best performances of the year.
There are a few Canadians among the nominees this year. Montreal-born director Jean-Marc Vallee saw his picture, Dallas Buyers Club, earn six nominations including Best Picture and acting nominations for Matthew McConaughey (Leading Role) and Jared Leto (Supporting Role). His film C.R.A.Z.Y. won the Best Picture award at the 2006 Genie Awards, and his last feature The Young Victoria won the Best Costume Design Oscar at the 2010 ceremony. Arcade Fire’s William Butler and long-time collaborator Owen Pallett are nominated for their Original Score for Her. This year marks the end of Canada’s three year streak of foreign language film nominations.
The 86th Academy Awards will be handed out Sunday, March 2nd at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, live on ABC.
