500 minks escape

Some 500 minks were let loose over weekend in Southwestern Ontario.

The OPP were called to a farm on Maple Grove Road in Brant County, where holes were cut into walls allowing the animals to escape.

Nancy Daigneault, VP of the International Fur Federation, says the incident bears all the hallmarks of animal rights extremists.

Daigneault says other farms have been attacked in recent years where minks are released.

Police won’t say whether there’s any evidence to confirm Daigneault’s suspicions.

The affected farm is one of about 300 fur farms in Canada and mink is the most popular farmed fur.

Most of the animals were recovered, but many of them had recently given birth.
The newborns, called kits, were separated from their mothers and police say there’s no guarantee the babies will be able to find their way back to their mothers to nurse.

If anyone has any information regarding this incident is asked to contact The OPP or Crime Stoppers.
