47 Ronin

Starring Keenu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rinko Kikuchi and Tadanobu Asano, 47 Ronin is a fictional retelling of the famous Japanese story.

While, the legend of the group of leaderless samurai (Ronin) may have it’s basis in history, the film makers certainly seem to have taken some fantastical liberties with their version.  47 Ronin features magic, monsters, and dragons, and will be trying to give The Hobbit a run for it’s money in the fantasy category.

The film comes from Universal Studios making it the first American adaptation of the 47 Ronin story. The historical story exemplifies the samurai code of honor, Busindo, and is part of the foundation of Japanese heritage and identity. It’s also common in Japanese culture, with fictionalized adaptations collectively known as the Chūshingura.

In this retelling the ronin search out an ally, Kai (Reeves), who can help them avenge their master’s death. 47 Ronin is the feature film debut for short film writer/director Carl Rinsch, it is rated PG.
