30-year-old man facing nearly 20 charges after traffic stop in Oakville

A traffic stop in Oakville has resulted in the seizure of a gun and almost 20 separate charges being laid against a 30-year-old man.

Halton police stopped a vehicle in the area of Dundas Street West and Proudfoot Trail around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Officers realized the driver was in breach of a court order, and there was also a handgun and a large amount of counterfeit cash in the vehicle.

Bennet Tagoe, 30, of no fixed address was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Possession of counterfeit money (2 counts)
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Carry concealed weapon
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of weapon
  • Careless use of firearm
  • Possess a firearm knowing serial number has been altered, defaced, removed or tampered with
  • Possession of break-in instruments
  • Possession of counterfeit instruments
  • Possession of firearm, ammunition contrary to prohibition order (2 counts)
  • Fail to comply with probation
  • Interfere with traffic
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle
  • Fail to surrender insurance card

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton.

At the time of his arrest, Tagoe was on a release order with conditions to not possess any weapons.
