Niagara police say a child playing with a lighter caused $150,000 in fire damage to a home in St. Catharines.

Officials say the fire happened in a semi-detached home on Wallace Street around 7 p.m. Monday night.

Smoke was seen coming from the basement of the building. Seven people were affected by the fire and one person suffered minor smoke inhalation.

EMS, fire fighters and police all responded to provide assistance.
