Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has been selected as this year’s winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The award recognizes his efforts to end the country’s decades-long civil war with the Farc rebel group. Santos had been considered a favourite for the prize up until Sunday, when Colombians voted to reject a peace deal.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award this morning from Oslo. The committee acknowledged the referendum setback, saying it was not a vote against peace but against a specific treaty.
