Getting Xmas ready at FedEx

The holiday spending season is well underway and more people than ever are turning to the internet to do their shopping. That makes this the busiest time of year for couriers.
Before the sun rises, containers of parcels arriving at the FedEx hub in at Pearson International, in Toronto, are set to be unloaded, resorted and repacked so they can be shipped to the their final destinations.
To make sure deliveries takeoff to the right location, parcels are scanned electronically.
“It does that through the labels we have on each package and cameras on the tunnels down there that sort all the volumes based on the information it picks up from that barcode.” said Senior Operations manager Brett Toner.
Toner says online shopping has become so popular, FedEx has had to expand it’s fleet for the holiday.
“We’ve added a sixth Boeing in our Canadian network, a 757, to handle that spike in volume of online shopping.”
Once the plane is packed it can cary up to 65 000 pounds of cargo.
Smaller planes, like a Cessna caravan, help make up the more than 650 aircraft the company uses to ship worldwide. Up to 20,000 packages can be sorted an hour in Toronto alone.
Country manager Kevin Ackroyd says investment in new technology is key.
“It’s in our trucks, it’s in our couriers, it’s in our airplanes. Technology helps make sure the packages get to the customer on time, which is what this time of year is all about.”
To ensure your packages are delivered in time for Christmas you can ship up until December 23rd, but FedEx recommends placing your orders as soon as possible.
