One person was taken to hospital after what neighbours describe as an “explosion” involving a food truck on the east Hamilton Mountain Sunday night.

Indy Bharaj of Hamilton police says officers responded around 8 p.m. to the area of Upper Ottawa Street and Mohawk Road for what was described as a “food truck explosion”.

Bharaj confirmed that the vehicle fire was in fact an explosion that occurred when the owner attempted to move the vehicle into his driveway before it caught fire while he was inside.

The owner of the vehicle, 48-year-old man, was taken to the local burn trauma centre in stable condition to be treated for moderate injuries, according to Hamilton paramedics.

Officials have not confirmed at this time if there were any other individuals involved.

The fire knocked down powerlines above the vehicle, resulting in the power having to be shut off before firefighters could move in to extinguish the flames, but it has since been restored.

It is believed that the vehicle was used to transport food and had at least one propane inside at the time of the explosion.

Neighbours in the area took to social media to describe what they say sounded like an explosion preceding the flames, while video footage from the scene showed a thick smoke rising above the burning vehicle.

Hamilton police remained on scene into Monday morning as an inveisgation into the incident continues.
