Law enforcement sources say one of the escaped murderers from Clinton Correctional Facility in New York has been shot and killed by police. New York State Police say a man believed to be escaped convict Richard Matt has been killed. They’re still waiting on a positive identification of the body. The other escapee, David Sweat, is still on the run.

Matt was reportedly shot in the woods around 65-kilometres from the prison where they escaped, which is close to the Canadian border. He was serving 25 years to life for the killing and dismembering of his former boss.

Sweat was serving a sentence of life without parole in the killing of a sheriff’s deputy.

The two convicts escaped from the maximum security facility three weeks ago on June 6th. Police say they have credible evidence that the pair were heading towards Canada. As a result, search efforts have moved to Malone and Constable, New York, about 18 kilometres from the Canadian border.

More than 11-hundred law enforcement officials are on the manhunt since new leads surfaced this week. Authorities are now focusing their efforts on tracking down David Sweat. New York State is offering a 50-thousand dollar reward for information that leads to his capture.
