Where’s ski season?

The next couple weeks are set to be far warmer than usual and that could mean a slow start for skiers and snowboarders.

The same can’t be said for our American neighbours. Midwest states like Nebraska and Iowa are digging themselves out of up to 30cm of snow.

“That’s because of the location of the low pressure. What we’re getting ahead of that is rain and warm temperatures” said weather specialist  Brian Wood.

Glen Eden Ski Resort in Milton welcomes 350 000 visitors each year, the second highest number in Ontario. But for now, they’re hoping consistent cold temperatures stop by first so they can fire up their snow makers.

“If we have -5 degrees for a 24 hour period we can fit a football field with 6-8 feet of snow.”

When the mercury did dip below zero last month, the staff began storing the snow.

‘We’ll stock pile it and when we get closer to opening up the lifts and opening up the skiing and snowboarding, we’ll get the groomers out and create good skiing and sliding surfaces.”

The resort also employs close to 700 young people and despite the lack of snow, everyone’s staying busy.

“We’ve got staff working at the rental shop, the hill operations, our patrol is padding. Snow school is doing their training and prep sessions.”

Sure it’s green outside but that hasn’t stopped people from stopping by Glen Eden and spending some green on a ski pass.

The park is looking to open mid to late December.
