“Two Mothers, One Prayer” details shared journey with cancer

Today, Lauran Sabourin spoke to a mother from Fonthill whose daughter died from cancer. Instead of wallowing in despair, Laura Lane wrote a book to help other parents navigate the horrible journey of childhood cancer.

Twelve year old Celeste had been complaining about excruciating headaches and double vision. She was rushed to the neurologist and within 12 hours she was undergoing brain surgery. The diagnosis, pineoblastoma, a rare cancerous tumour. She endured months of chemotherapy and radiation, vomiting and exhaustion. In an online search Celeste’s mother Laura Lane found another 12 year old, Haley, in New Jersey with the same rare cancer. “They finally had someone else who understood what they were going through” says Laura Lane.

Mothers Laura and Laurie emailed about successes and setbacks. From that Laura wrote a book, “Two mothers, One prayer” detailing their shared journey with cancer.

And then the MRI in January 2013. “They said there was so much cancer in her body they didn’t expect her to live more than days or weeks. The idea of losing her was so hard–it sent me on a whirlwind.”

They vowed to make each day she had left something beautiful. She talked to David Tennant, skyped with Anne Hathaway and Robin Williams. “And he was so lovely and funny and we were telling him how we’d been watching Mork and Mindy. He said ‘oh that makes me feel old'”

Celine Dion dedicated a performance to Celeste.

“One of the hardest conversations I had was the day she said Mommy I’m going to miss you….and I said I’m going to miss you too sweetie”

Celeste passed away two years to the day she was diagnosed. Laura will be holding a book signing in Jordan this Sunday June 7th. The next day would have been Celeste’s 17th birthday.

The book launch and art auction will be held at the UnWined Bean and Bistro on Main Street in Jordan, from 6 to 9 p-m.
