Toronto man charged with hate crime after woman assaulted

A Toronto man is facing a hate crime charge after he allegedly assaulted a woman in a subway station.

Police say a man was walking through the Finch subway station around 2 p.m. yesterday and began “yelling aggressively” at a passer-by.

As the man continued walking, police say he came across a 66-year-old black woman. He allegedly knocked the woman to the ground and began yelling racial slurs at her.

Members of the public stepped in to stop the assault and held the man until police arrived.

Peter Dwyer, 36, was arrested and charged with assault (hate crime).
