Burlington Lift Bridge injury

The Ministry of Labour is investigating after a man was seriously hurt while working on the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge.

It happened around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon. Police tells CHCH the man was 1 of 3 people working near the top of the bridge, when an electrical cable snapped.

The workers were reportedly using a rope to pull the cable across the bridge when it happened.

The man, who’s condition has been upgraded to critical, was likely hit by the cable before falling about 5 feet and was said to be undergoing surgery late Wednesday afternoon, that worker was wearing a safety harness.

Another worker was injured too but expected to be okay, a third was not hurt. Police say all three are with a private company contracted to work on the bridge.

They were about 180 feet or nearly 55 metres high when the electrical cable broke.

The bridge has re-open to vehicle traffic but closed to any large marine traffic that would require the bridge to lift for passage.

So far there’s no word on when the bridge will be back to full use.
