Babies’ DNA studied

Researchers at Stanford University have looked at the DNA of a fetus in a landmark study.

So far, two pregnant women have undergone the test.

And researchers say they didn’t need a DNA sample from the father to get the results.

In the new study, only a blood sample from the fetus’s mother was used to find rare genetic diseases not able to be identified before.

Experts say this means invasive genetic testing — like an amniocentesis, may not be necessary anymore.

After larger trials, experts say the test could help doctors treat genetic disease before a baby is born.
