Flying truck tire victim identified

Police have now identified the Burlington man who was killed when his SUV was hit by a wheel that flew off a transport truck. OPP identified the victim as 69 year old Paul Koenderman who lived up in Kilbride, just north of Burlington. We spoke with his wife Suzanne today who gave some insight to an accomplished man who had a tragic end.

Paul Koenderman’s family was his greatest joy. The 18 year resident of Kilbride had 2 children, 4 grandchildren. He was an accomplished engineer and business professional. The former CEO of Aecon Industrial was also a president of energy company Babcock and Wilcox, chair of the Canadian Nuclear Association, and board chair of the University of Waterloo where he knew Governor General David Johnston. Most recently he was Executive VP of Aecon, today their President released a statement saying:

We are saddened to confirm the sudden passing of our esteemed colleague Paul Koenderman. His leadership and contributions leave a lasting legacy in our organization and he will be dearly missed. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends as we share in their loss during this incredibly difficult time.

Koenderman was on his way to his Muskoka cottage when his SUV was hit by a tire that flew off a transport truck just north of King road on Highway 400. There have been no charges so far but the OPP are still investigating the crash.
