David Bowie, the innovative and iconic singer who sang hits like “Fame,” “Heroes” and “Let’s Dance,” died Sunday after a battle with cancer.

Bowie was 69 years old. His career, spanned five decades.

A statement was issued on his social media accounts, saying he “died peacefully, surrounded by his family” after an “18 month battle with cancer”.

David Bowie turned 69 on Friday, the same day he released a new album called “Blackstar.”

Many celebrities took to Twitter to express their condolences.
