Repaired heart cells

Your skin could one day save your heart!

For the first time, researchers in Israel have taken skin cells from heart failure patients and re-programmed them into new heart muscle cells.

The new cells are then able to fuse with existing heart tissue and repair damage in even the oldest and most advanced patients.

Scientists say because the new cells are derived from the patients themselves, there is little chance of the immune system rejecting them.

While this research is promising, it could be 10 years before clinical trials are ready to begin.
