A barn fire in a rural Hamilton neighbourhood has left $450,000 worth of destruction in its aftermath.
The sagging roof of Doug Gowland’s fire damaged barn threatens to collapse on the 100,000 lbs of onions being stored below.
Firefighters battled the quickly moving blaze at Concession 2 road west in Copetown for seven hours yesterday. It’s cause, a suspected electrical fire.
Isaiah Huisman and his family rent the neighbouring home from Gowland, and awoke to the sound of a fire alarm.
For the past 5 years the barn has been rented to Brenn B Farms, who packages onions and potatoes there.
Brenn B estimates each box of onions is worth up to $2,500 dollars.
While the total damage estimate of the barn is $450,000.
After the insurance process is finalized, Gowland says he’ll likely rebuild the barn that was first constructed in 1992.
