Canada Post worker charged in Welland mail theft investigation

Police have charged a Canada Post worker after two prepaid credit cards bound for a Welland resident’s home were allegedly stolen.

Niagara police began investigating in February when a person reported two prepaid credit cards in their name had been used in various stores throughout Welland, despite the person never having received them in the mail.

Security footage from that time showed an unknown woman making a purchase while wearing a Canada Post uniform.

Detectives worked with Canada Post’s postal inspectors to identify a suspect. Katie Lee Walmsley, 45, of Welland was arrested on Tuesday and charged with two counts each of theft of mail and unauthorized use of a credit card.

Walmsley was released with a future court date scheduled for Sept. 22 in Welland.

Police say she was a letter carrier responsible for sorting and delivering mail in the area of Fitch St. and Wilson Rd. Walmsley delivered on the same route since August 2022, including Loyalist Dr., Maureen Ave., Westwood Cres., Donna Marie Dr., Westdale Dr., Leonard Ave., Lisa Court, Jennifer Court, and Plaza Way.

More charges are expected as police believe there may be other victims from along the postal worker’s route.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the investigating officers at 905-688-4111, option 3, ext. 1009077.
