Niagara Regional Police advised residents in Port Colborne to take shelter Monday night after an out-of-control vehicle collided with a house, which caused a gas leak.

A driver was travelling on Knoll St. at Main St. West shortly before midnight when for unknown reasons they lost control of their vehicle and hit a house.

The impact ripped the gas meter off the side of a house and caused a gas leak in the area.

Fire crews responded from Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services, securing the scene and asking residents in adjacent homes to evacuate.

Reports say an EMS unit was on standby at the scene, but it is uncertain whether the driver of the vehicle suffered any injuries as a result of the collision.

Police closed Main St. West in Port Colborne between Steele St. and Oakwood St. to allow workers from Enbridge Gas to repair the leak.

As of 3 a.m., the road closure on Main St. West continued and Enbridge crews were still on scene.
