TORONTO — Toronto police have identified one of three suspects in Thursday’s home invasion attack on a family of four in the affluent Bridle Path neighbourhood.
They say Daijohn Richards, 23, suffered an accidental gunshot wound during the attack by one of the other suspects and may be favouring his right shoulder.
In a news conference Saturday morning, Toronto police Insp. Kristy Smith said officers responded to reports of a person with a gunshot wound at St. Joseph’s Health Centre shortly after the home invasion.
Richards was discharged from the hospital early Thursday morning, but investigators only identified him as a suspect and made the connection later.
Officers did not arrest Richards while he was in the hospital receiving treatment, said Smith.
“What we need to make sure is that we ironclad a conviction and we don’t just go off of suspicion,” she said.
A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Police say they are still looking for the two other suspects. All suspects are still considered armed and dangerous.
Police first received reports of three people shot inside a residence in the Post Road and Hyde Park Circle at around 3:40 a.m. Thursday.
Investigators say a family of four were attacked when masked intruders forced their way into the home through the rear door, armed with guns and a hammer.
The suspects then fled in a dark-coloured SUV. No other description of the vehicle has been provided.
In a statement released Friday, David Morton, CEO of MAC Group, said his family is focused on recovery and supporting one another following the attack.
“No family should ever have to experience this. People should be able to sleep peacefully in their homes without fear of armed individuals breaking in and threatening their lives,” he wrote in his statement.
Some members of the family have been released from the hospital, said Smith.
“Through the grace of God, they are in life-altering condition and not life-threatening condition.”
Police are asking anyone with information about Richards or the other suspects to come forward.
The two male suspects are described as wearing dark clothing and are estimated to be about 20 years old.
So far this year, 119 home invasions have been reported in Toronto, up more than 32 per cent from the same time last year, police said in an email Friday.
