Police watchdog clears officers involved in 2025 fatal shooting in Welland

Ontario’s top police watchdog has cleared Niagara Regional Police officers of wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man in Welland last winter.
The Special Investigations Unit says five officers fired at least 18 rounds at the man in a residence near Ontario Road and King Street on Dec. 13, 2025.
A sixth officer reportedly struck the man — who has not been publicly identified — which killed him.
Officers in Niagara were dispatched to assist with the arrest of the man, who was accused of discharging a firearm in a case of intimate partner violence in Mississauga.
The man is said to have repeatedly shot at officers during the arrest.
