Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid over 9,800 traffic-related charges over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

OPP focused on behaviours that continue to contribute to serious and fatal collisions, including impaired driving, inattentive driving, speeding and improper use of or failure to wear seatbelts.

Between Oct. 9 and 12, officers laid 4,924 speeding charges, 506 seatbelt charges, 174 impaired driving charges and 108 distracted driving charges.

This traffic safety initiative was part of Operation Impact, an annual national campaign led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police to help improve road safety across Canada.

Officers are encouraging all motorists to keep making safety a priority every time they get behind a wheel.
