Police warn residents of increase in Halton break-ins

Halton police are reminding residents to remain vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activity as officers see an increase in home break-ins in the region.

Investigators say homes backing onto or located near trail systems and green spaces are being specifically targeted.

Detectives say thieves are taking advantage of reduced daylight hours with most break-ins taking place between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Unlit and unoccupied homes are most vulnerable.

Officers say in many cases, suspects gain entry by smashing rear doors or windows using tools. They believe organized crime groups responsible for similar offences across the region are behind these increases.

Police say before committing these crimes, suspects often wait for residents to return home from work and then leave again for evening errands such as grocery shopping or children’s sports. Entry is typically made once they believe the home is empty.

Investigators say when thieves are inside, they quickly go through bedrooms and other areas, targeting cash, jewellery, luxury items and government identification.

Detectives say most incidents are completed within minutes, with suspects leaving undetected and typically dressed in dark clothing.

Residents are reminded to keep their homes secure by locking all doors, windows and gates, using a home security system, leaving interior lights or music on when leaving the home as well as to trim their greenery to improve visibility around your property.
