Sixteen volunteers came together on Saturday to collect a total of over 3,000 discarded cigarette butts from Gage Park and T.B. McQuesten Community Park in Hamilton.

This local event was part of the UNSMOKE Butt Blitz, which is recognized as the world’s largest cigarette litter cleanup.

The organizer of this event, A Greener Future, says the goal of this initiative is to collect 1.5 million cigarette butts across Canada during April and September of this year.

A Greener Future says cigarette butts account for one in five pieces of litter found during their shoreline cleanups. 

The waste collected locally will be sent to TerraCycle Canada for recycling, contributing to the over 6.3 million cigarette butts collected by Butt Blitz volunteers since 2015. 

The next UNSMOKE Butt Blitz event is on Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Burlington Beach at 1100 Lakeshore Rd. in Burlington.
