Trump threatens to increase tariffs on Canadian autos, steel to 50% in January

U.S. President Donald Trump says tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel could rise to 50 per cent on Jan. 1.

The threat comes after 50 per cent tariffs were imposed Saturday on a range of other Canadian goods, following the breakdown of trade discussions between Canada and the United States.

Trump criticized Canada in a post on Truth Social Monday, calling it one of “the worst nations in the world to deal with.” He presented no evidence for his claim.

He also described Canada as “entitled” and repeated his claim that the United States does not need Canada, while Canada depends on the U.S.

Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington on Saturday of attempting to introduce last-minute measures that could have limited Canada’s ability to negotiate trade agreements with other countries.

Carney said Canada would respond to the latest U.S. tariffs with matching, dollar-for-dollar measures by Sept. 8.
