Full closure of busy Hamilton intersection planned for mid-August

A busy Hamilton intersection is set to close mid-August for a number of months for major infrastructure work.

Starting Aug. 17, the junction at Main Street East and Ottawa Street North will close for what the City of Hamilton says is “the next phase of critical infrastructure improvements.”

The City says the full closure is required to allow crews to “safely complete watermain and sewer installation, utility relocations and road reconstruction.”

“This work will renew critical municipal infrastructure, improve the long-term reliability of local roads and help prepare the corridor for future Hamilton LRT construction,” reads a statement from the City.

The closure is expected to last around four months, weather and logistics permitting.

It will impact north-south and east-west traffic, as well as Hamilton Street Railway services.

Residents can continue to access side streets east and west of Ottawa Street North, as well as north and south of Main Street East.

The City says that emergency services and waste collection services for residents will not be affected during the intersection closure.
