Grand Erie Public Health is warning the public of a potential exposure to chickenpox at Brantford General Hospital on July 21 and 22.

It says people who visited the emergency department at Brantford General Hospital between 11:53 p.m. on July 21 to 2:48 p.m. on July 22, may have been exposed to chickenpox.

Symptoms usually develop 14 -16 days after exposure and typically include fever, fatigue and an itchy rash that progresses to fluid-filled blisters.

Most people who have had chickenpox or received two doses of varicella vaccine are protected against infection.

However, those at a higher risk include infants under the age of one, pregnant individuals who are not immune, people with weakened immune systems and individuals who have never had chickenpox or have not been vaccinated.

Grand Erie Public Health is advising anyone who may have been exposed during the specified timeframe to monitor for symptoms until August 11-12 (21 days post exposure).

Individuals who fall under any of the high-risk categories are encouraged to follow up with their primary care provider or visit a walk-in clinic as soon as possible for assessment.

Those without a primary care provider can access care at the Primary Care Access Clinic by calling 226-388-4725 or by booking an appointment with the Virtual Urgent Care Clinic.

Anyone who develops symptoms such as fever or a rash is advised to stay home and avoid contact with others as well as contact a healthcare provider or clinic as soon as possible.

While most adults over 50 are already immune to chickenpox, anyone unsure of their status or at high risk for complications should contact their doctor or Grand Erie Public Health at 519-753-4937 ext. 6440.
