A Hamilton artist has created a new mural honouring hometown basketball hero Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his son Ares.

The large piece of artwork is on display just inside Gate 9 at the TD Coliseum in Hamilton’s downtown.

The mural features images of Gilgeous-Alexander, his son and scenes connected to the NBA champion’s life in Hamilton.

The area around the mural has been named the Ares Atrium, commemorating his legacy in the city and to the sport.

The artist says the themes behind the art were suggested by SGA’s team.

“When I was asked to work on it I was given those ideas and those concepts and was given pretty good free reign on how that was actually going to be visualized and seen in the mural. That was great,” says Kareem Ferreira.

Ferreira says it took about 15 days to paint, but before that there was lots of time to develop the concept, and add in his personal artistic style.

The Hamilton artist says his dad and a close friend worked on it with him and he’s very happy with the final product.
