Busy East Hamilton intersection closure to come this summer

The City of Hamilton says crews will begin preparing for construction at the intersection of Main Street East and Ottawa Street North on July 7.

A full closure is expected later this summer, although the city has not said when it will begin.

The work will include “watermain installation and other road improvements to renew critical municipal infrastructure, improve the long-term reliability of local roads and help prepare the corridor for future Hamilton LRT construction,” reads a statement.

The construction and closure of the intersection is expected to last four months. It will impact the north/south and east/west traffic, as well as Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) services.

Residents can access side streets east and west of Ottawa Street North, as well as north and south of Main Street East.

No vehicular access will be permitted through the intersection to ensure residents’ safety and that the work can continue uninterrupted.

A webpage for the work can be found at http://hamilton.ca/mainottawa. HSR detours can be found at www.hamilton.ca/HSRDetours.

The city says that emergency services and waste collection will not be affected during this time.
