A new survey that was conducted online suggests many Canadians are open to the idea of joining the European Union.
A survey of 4,000 people by Spark Advocacy found one in four respondents thought formal EU membership would be a good idea, while another 58 per cent say the idea is worth exploring.
The remainder opposed the idea.
Spark’s chief strategy officer Bruce Anderson says the results show Canadians are looking for ways to reduce reliance on the United States, especially after more than a year of U.S. tariffs under President Donald Trump.
The survey comes after France’s foreign minister floated the idea of Canada joining the EU, though Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized deepening ties without formal membership.
The Spark poll cannot be assigned a margin of error, because it was conducted online.
