The City of Burlington’s Festival of Lights kicked off Friday night at Spencer Smith Park and will run through early January as the holiday tradition marks its 30th year.

The winter wonderland — complete with 60 glowing displays — will be open daily from 4 p.m. until midnight until Jan. 6. Pets on leashes are allowed in the area.

Organizers expected over 1,000 attendees at the opening of the festival that took place at Burlington City Hall.

The event included a performance by the Teen Tour Band and a tree lighting.

Those in attendance were handed candles and encouraged to visit some business, take a stroll through the downtown core, get some free treats and visit Santa.

From there, event goers headed down to the waterfront to visit the lit up displays.

“It’s actually really incredible because I’ve met a lot of people down there, families, adults with kids. And they’re sort of like a second, third generation coming down, enjoying the lights with their kids. It’s really quite magical,” said John Fanjoy from the Burlington Lions Club.

“We love it here. It’s a family tradition,” said Emily, a local resident.

Various pop-up events will be held over the coming weeks, from ice sculpting demos to line dancing and a seniors’ tea.

The festival is organized by volunteers, with support from local businesses and organizations.
