Issue at southern Ontario border ‘partially resolved’ after system outage causes delays

Transport trucks are moving slowly into Canada at the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie, after lengthy delays Tuesday.
A computer system outage had caused a huge backup Monday night into Tuesday morning.
Border crossings of commercial traffic from the U.S. to Canada in the New York area were severely delayed.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said the outage slowed down commercial processing at Canada-bound lanes at the Peace Bridge and Queenston-Lewiston Bridge.
Late Tuesday night, the CBSA said the problem had been partially resolved, allowing most truck shipments to go ahead.
The agency has apologized to commercial drivers for the inconvenience.
Trucks going from Canada to the U.S. are not impacted.
U.S. government shutdown affecting border crossing staff
Meanwhile, the U.S. government shutdown earlier on Wednesday, raising concerns that it would affect traffic at the border crossings in the Niagara region.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says operations will not be affected by the shutdown.
Immigration, customs and border agents will continue to work at the Lewiston-Queenston, Niagara Falls and the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie, though four out of five have been ordered to work without pay.
Out of 20,000 Homeland Security employees across the U.S., 5 per cent have been laid off, 78 per cent are working unpaid, and just 16 per cent are still being paid.
