French government in crisis as MPs vote out Prime Minister Bayrou

French lawmakers have voted to oust Prime Minister Francois Bayrou, forcing the country into a political crisis, and leaving it without a full government at an integral time for geopolitical tensions.

The move came after Bayrou himself called the confidence vote, staking his government on an emergency confidence debate relating to French debt.

The defeated prime minister presented his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron Tuesday, who must now decide how to replace him.

This will be the country’s fifth prime minister in less than two years.

Macron’s office says his decision about a replacement for the country’s prime minister would likely happen in the coming days.
