Thorold man arrested after driving impaired in Port Colborne with loaded firearm

A man was charged Tuesday after Niagara Regional Police found him driving while impaired in Port Colborne and carrying a loaded firearm.

Officers responded to reports of an impaired driver at around 7 p.m. at Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores Resort at 490 Empire Road.

Police conducted a traffic stop in the grounds of the resort and determined that the man was impaired by alcohol.

They then placed the man under arrest.

Officers say further investigation revealed that the man was also in possession of a firearm.

25-year-old Donovan Smith of Thorold has been charged with offences including possessing a prohibited firearm without a license, possessing a loaded regulated firearm, and impaired operation of a conveyance.

Smith appeared at a bail hearing Wednesday at a St. Catharines courthouse, where he was remanded into custody.

Smith also received a 90-day administrative driver’s license suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment in addition to previous charges.
