The renovations at Hamilton’s airport are complete, three months after construction began.

The upgrades include a brand new facade, a better interior layout, and a new carrier, offering flights to both eastern and western Canada.

Monday, at the ribbon cutting ceremony, officials from both John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, and the city, were proud to say that things have come to a completion on time and on budget.

“The revitalized terminal, from curb to gate, represents a total upgrade for Hamilton. We’re talking a refreshed check-in area, streamlined security experience, enhanced baggage claim, and an airport facade that truly says you’ve arrived,” said Andrea Horwath, mayor of Hamilton.

Those flying out of Hamilton will first notice the modernized YHM signage out front of the terminal, along with a new, sleek canopy.

The changes inside the airport include brighter lighting, an improved layout, and more space – all designed with feng shui in mind, to make Hamilton a real contender among Canada’s airport landscape.

And with Porter Airlines stepping in, the timing couldn’t be better.

“Tomorrow we are launching service from Hamilton airport with daily flights to Vancouver and Halifax. And next week, on June 11th, we’ll be adding daily flights to Edmonton and Calgary,” said Michael Deluce, Porter Airlines CEO.

“Porter is a different carrier, they’re not a discount carrier, they’re an airline that attracts both leisure passengers and also business passengers. And I think for the economy of the greater Hamilton area, having a carrier here like Porter that will be able to appeal to all demographics I think is critical,” said aviation expert, Robert Kokonis.

The airport’s operator says it’s not just about travel, it’s about growth.

“This is just the first in a lot of the expansion works that we have in terms of growing and continuing to manage the airport, and develop the airport. As part of the new lease that we entered into with the city in September of 2024, it was all a part of the vision of what could be unlocked, and what could be capable in the potential here of the airport,” said Peter Tong, TradePort CEO.

And for the surrounding region, it’s a great alternative when compared to flying out of Pearson.

“I do travel a lot for my job so I’m always debating, should I take the Uber? Should I take the bus? What’s the easiest way? And there really is no easy way to get from Burlington to Pearson. But, you know, it’s a great spot. But coming here, 20 minutes, I mean, you can’t really beat that. And easy parking as well, so good for them,” said Rory Nisan, Burlington city councillor.
