Jailed Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy is being re-tried on Thursday on terrorism-related charges.

Former foreign affairs minister John Baird said just days ago that Fahmy was set for an imminent release.

Fahmy’s colleague Australian journalist, Peter Greste, was set free last weekend and deported.

The two along with Egyptian Baher Mohamed have been jailed for more than a year.

They were working for news outlet Al-Jazeera when they were arrested and accused of supporting the banned Islamist group, the Muslim brotherhood.

Fahmy’s high profile human rights lawyer, Amal Clooney, is expected to travel to Cairo in the coming days to press for his release.
