Kenyan mall crisis continues

(video updated)  The sun has set on day three of a stand off at the Nairobi mall where two Canadians were killed in a terrorist attack. Kenyan authorities claim to have the attackers contained, but reports suggest several hostages may still be captive.

The Canadian connection to the ongoing terrorism at Westgate mall in Nairobi has intensified.

There are now reports a Canadian may have been involved as an attacker.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he’s not concerned about a trend of homegrown radicalization in Canada, but is investigating the issue.

“I’m not worried about a mass phenomenon but obviously there are always cases that we follow very closely and work with our international partners on.”

The two Canadian victims have now been identified.

59-year old Vancouver hotelier, Naguib Damji was in Kenya on a business trip, and it’s suspected he died of a gunshot wound.

29-year old diplomat, Annemarie Desloges of Ottawa was also killed.

Her husband Robert Munk was injured. They are among at least 68 dead and 175 injured.

Kenyan authorities say they’ve gained control over the terrorists. “We want to assure Kenyans that our forces are in full control of this situation and we are certain that in no time the fire will be put off.”

The attackers built a huge fire out of mattresses to distract troops. They’re still holding an unknown number of hostages, though most have been released.

Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda linked group claiming responsibility for the attack, says they’re sending a message about the presence of Kenyan troops in Somalia.

Kenyan authorities said they hoped the standoff would end today, but with an unknown number of people still being held hostage it looks as though it will carry over into a fourth day.
