Transportation Safety Board promises to find answers in rail disaster

As the search continues for victims, the investigation into the deadly train derailment and explosion in Lac-Megantic, Quebec could take months.

The Transportation Safety Board says they are committed to finding answers for Canadians. They hope to explain what happened, why it happened, and what needs to be done to prevent it from happening again.

The chair of the Transportation Safety Board says it will be a long time before answers are found. Wendy Tadros promised a top to bottom investigation into what she describes as one of the most devastating train crashes in canadian history.

“what we are looking for in all runaways is the grade, the weight of the train, the number of brake sets and the company’s policies and procedures. We also have to examine the locomotives and the tanker cars. However, before anything is moved we need to document it all. We are doing that now through photogrammetry of the site and with the assistance of the NTSB we will perform 3D laser scanning to create a model to find out how the tankers failed and how they exploded,” she said.

The death toll now stands at 28, with another 22 people still missing. Hundreds of people are still displaced from their homes.
