There were many events being held tonight celebrating all things “Canada” including the Canada Day festivities at Bayfront Park in Hamilton.
Thousands of people came down to celebrate Canada’s birthday. The party earlier was packed at Bayfront Park and there was plenty of fun to be had.
Seven-year old Martiena Nihad was born in Syria but now calls Canada her home and native land. She and her brother Fadi celebrated Canada’s birthday by painting their faces: “What do you guys like the most about Canada Day? That we get so see fireworks.”
The fireworks were spectacular — for many the highlight of the night. But there was also plenty of food — from hot dogs to ice cream.
There was an ariel acrobatic show and friendly games of soccer and volleyball. But for 67-year old Michael Quick, today is an extra special day. It’s also his birthday: “Celebrate Canada Day, the birthday and mine together. I love this country been here all my life and never going to move.”
For Richard Zafra he came to Canada 11-years ago from the Philippines: “Ever since we came here, we fell in love especially with the four seasons.”
And summer is his favorite because that’s when we celebrate Canada’s birthday.
Another Canada has wrapped up — our 147th birthday. One thing that struck me about the many diverse people who came down here tonight is the thing we all have in common. Our love for our country.
