3 female inmates treated for suspected overdoses at Barton jail

First Published:

Hamilton paramedics say three female inmates at Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre received medical treatment Thursday night for suspected overdoses.

Emergency crews were called to the jail on Barton St. shortly before 8 p.m.

EMS superintendent Dave Thompson says two of the women were taken to hospital by ambulance and the other by a corrections staff member.

Hamilton police Cst. Jerome Stewart says the victims, two 22-year-olds and a 33-year-old, were all sharing a cell.

“They have since been medically cleared and are back at the Detention Centre,” said Stewart.

These latest incidents come just four weeks after a woman in her thirties died of a suspected drug overdose at the jail.

Thompson says there were 20 overdoses in the city of Hamilton between May 1 and 7.
