3 African-owned fashion brands to look out for

First Published:

A beauty and lifestyle expert has released a shopping guide for African fashion brands in Canada.

The free, online resource features more than 25 brands across the country to inspire people to diversify their clothing choices and encourage African-owned businesses.

“We should show our generous support for the fact that we love and appreciate the work of Black creatives,” Jamila Kyari said.

“We can always think of wearing African fashion by styling and incorporating it into our daily looks for Black History Month and even throughout the year. Let’s not relegate it to a particular date, month or season, but let it become a lifestyle.”

Here are three of the 25 fashion brands Kyari highlighted on Morning Live:

Ofuure

Since 2015, Ofuure has been designing versatile pieces in African prints and bold patterns.

Their name means “it is well,” which is derived from Edo State in Nigeria, particularly from the Ishan tribe.

Sirani’s Fashion

Fatim Sylla launched Sirani’s Fashion in 2017. The brand reflects her love of African prints– a passion that started during childhood and can be traced back to Ivory Coast.

Kejeo Designs

Sena Ahohe created Kejeo Designs in 2016 out of her love for fashion and the bold African designs.  Kejeo is derived from “nou kéjéo-a” in the “Mina” language from Bénin and Togo in West Africa which means something that looks beautiful on you.

Kyari showed off a gorgeous bag that is very functional and easy to carry around while running errands
