Lord Stanley’s mug was once again in Hamilton and hockey fans lined up to see, touch, and take pictures with the cup many hockey players dream of holding one day.
At 7:00 this morning, people were lined outside Kenesky’s waiting for the doors to open at 8:30. By 10:30, at least 400 people had been inside the store to see the Stanley Cup.
The cup is here because Mount Hope native Mark Bernard who is an executive with the Chicago Blackhawks and a former pro hockey player in the minors wanted to bring the cup home. “Wherever you go with the Stanley Cup, Stanley is a rock star. Very, very fortunate. There’s so many great people in this hockey business that we all work in, and that have never had the opportunity to win it once, and I’m just so gracious and proud that we’ve had the opportunity to do it three times now.
Richie Tyo actually got to kiss Lord Stanley’s cup. “To see your team win it and come here and experience it like that is beyond words. It’s so hard to explain. Joy when you see it. We did make out a little bit, me and the Stanley Cup.
“A little kissing and touching and caressing. Just PG stuff, nothing bad.”
Kenesky’s is celebrating 100 years and owner Joel Huslman said what better way to celebrate than with Lord Stanley. “(It’s) something for the community, and for Hamilton to share. It’s our 100th anniversary this year. The store has been business in 100 years, and nothing’s more perfect than having the Stanley Cup here.”
The Stanley Cup was only there until 10:30. Mark and his family plan to have some personal time with the trophy.
CHCH’s Cindy Csordas will show you how excited people were to be even near the Stanley Cup, tonight on the Evening News at 6.
