The McMaster Marauders football team has a scrimmage tomorrow against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. But to Marauders running back Chris Pezzetta, it’s more than a scrimmage. It’s an important step in his return to the gridiron.

His is a story of perseverance, tenacity and dedication.

The last time Pezzetta played in an actual game was the 2011 Vanier Cup. It was his rookie season and he led the Marauders with 468 rushing yards, and 5 touchdowns.

On the second day of training camp in 2012 while innocently jogging across the field he tore his ACL.

He spent that season on the sidelines and then a few weeks before training camp began in 2013, he injured the same knee again and was forced to sit-out a second season.

Coach Stefan Ptaszek is looking forward to having him back.

“The Chris Pezzetta I saw in his first year was one of the best football players we’ve ever had.  We’re in no hurry for him to get back to that point, but we know he could and we’re gonna help him along the way.”

Now 22 years old, the Burlington Notre Dame alumni is on a strict training protocol but is expected to see some playing time in Saturday’s scrimmage against Laurier.

He says by game time his old injuries will be in the back of his mind.

“Here and there you’re a little more cautious, but I’m a competitive person and once they blow the whistle and the ball is snapped, I love being out here…forget about it a bit.”
