U.S. Election 2024: major issues driving voter engagement

Republican candidate Donald Trump is trying to turn the narrative around on his “garbage” controversy. Trump has been facing backlash after a comedian called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” at a GOP rally on Sunday. But the winds have changed ever since President Joe Biden misspoke, for lack of a better term.

However, there’s another quote from Trump’s Wisconsin rally last night that is going viral for all the wrong reasons. The comment didn’t land well with many voters. After Trump took credit for his Supreme Court picks overturning Roe v. Wade and abortion protections in 2022, 21 states moved to limit or restrict access to the procedure.

The blue ticket is weighing in today.

Kamala Harris is reiterating her promise to reinstate Roe v. Wade while on the campaign trail. Trump’s stance on the issue has wavered throughout the campaign, though he has stopped short of backing a federal ban. His campaign has also tried to distance Trump from his ties to the so-called “Project 2025.”

Meanwhile, one of Trump’s top supporters is running into a legal roadblock. Elon Musk is being sued after pledging to give $1 million a day to an American registered to vote in a swing state. Musk failed to show up in court today, where a Pennsylvania judge said he would place the lawsuit on hold while a federal court decides whether to take the case.

Trump and Harris will both rally voters in Nevada and Arizona today, as swing state polling between the two candidates remains far too close to call.
