Toronto island airport expansion halt shakes rail project support

Senior provincial sources say Doug Ford is reconsidering his support for Ottawa’s plan to build a high-speed rail line across Eastern Ontario after the Carney government halted plans to expand the runways at Billy Bishop Airport.

Last week, Canada’s transport minister said the decision was driven by public backlash over the proposed airport expansion following public consultations.

Meanwhile, nearly a dozen Progressive Conservative MPPs say many farmers and property owners also oppose the rail project, citing concerns about the impact on their land.
